Bachkovo Waterfall
Back to all places
Starting from the Ossuary, with its medieval frescoes behind you, your journey into the heart of the Rhodope Mountains begins. Face away from the monastery and follow the wide path that leads deeper into the forest. You are entering the Chervenata Stena (Red Wall) Reserve, where the air is noticeably cooler and filled with the scent of wild boxwood and pine.
As you walk, the path gently ascends, keeping the Klyuvia River as your constant companion on the left. The sound of the water will grow from a soft murmur to a persistent rush.
The trail is well-trodden and surrounded by towering beech trees that create a natural green tunnel, dappling the sunlight onto the mossy rocks.
After about 15 minutes of steady walking, the gorge begins to tighten, and the humidity in the air rises. You will soon hear the distinct roar of the Bachkovo Waterfall echoing through the trees. Follow the sound as the path curves toward the riverbed.
When the waterfall finally comes into view, you’ll see it isn’t a sharp, jagged drop, but a graceful karst cascade. The water spills roughly 10 meters down rounded, travertine limestone terraces, which are heavily blanketed in vibrant emerald moss.
