The Regional Archaeological museum of Plovdiv

Step into Plovdiv’s time machine on Unification Square: the Regional Archaeological Museum. Inside, the city’s whole timeline snaps into focus—Neolithic hearths and figurines, dazzling Thracian gold and tomb finds, then straight into Roman Philippopolis with sculpture, inscriptions, surgical kits, and pieces from the theatre, stadium, and forum. The mosaics are a showstopper (look for the serene Eirene panel and a rare synagogue menorah mosaic), and the coin room is a treasure in its own right—tens of thousands of Greek, Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman coins that turn politics and trade into something you can hold in your hand. The building itself is spacious and modernized inside, so the route is easy to follow—prehistoric → Thracian → Roman → medieval—ending with the numismatics. In one visit, you get the city’s greatest artefacts, beautifully displayed and perfectly paced for an hour or two.
