The Roman library
Back to all places
It is extremely rare for these structures to be identified, especially in the provinces. Built in the 2nd century AD, the library formed part of the Forum’s administrative quarter, where laws were posted, accounts kept, and public debate lived. Its plan is rectangular—about 20 × 15 m—built in brick, and it served not only to store scrolls and codices, but also as a venue for reading, teaching, and public discussion—think of it as Philippopolis’s knowledge house at the city’s front door.
