The street of crafts
Back to all places
The Street of Crafts, a short lane where Old Plovdiv still works with its hands. The street hugs the medieval fortification line near the gate, and many of the houses here keep their Revival era proportions, low eaves, and painted façades wrapped around small courtyards. In the 1800s, this was a threshold between the Acropolis above and the market streets below; today, it is a row of intimate workshops where artisans open their doors and let you watch, try, and take a piece of the city with you.
Listen for the tap of a hammer on copper and the whisper of a plane on wood. One doorway frames a woodcarver shaping vine scrolls like the ones in local churches, next a potter centers clay on the wheel and pulls a jug from a spinning cylinder, in the next room an icon painter lays gold leaf and mixes pigments by egg tempera. You will also pass weaving looms, lace and embroidery, leatherwork, and jewelry benches where a torch glows and silver twists into filigree. Most studios sell what they make, and many also offer quick demonstrations, a stamped copper token, a first pinch pot, a name written in calligraphy, small moments that turn a visit into a memory.
