Tsanko Lavrenov

Tsanko Lavrenov, born in 1896, was one of Bulgaria’s most beloved 20th-century painters, best known for his vivid and romantic depictions of Old Plovdiv, monasteries, and Revival-era architecture.

A self-taught artist and art critic, Lavrenov was deeply inspired by Byzantine iconography, medieval Bulgarian art, and the spirit of the National Revival. His style is instantly recognizable — characterized by bold colors, decorative details, and a dreamlike, almost fairy-tale atmosphere.

Beyond painting, he also helped revive interest in traditional Bulgarian art and was part of the “September Four” group, which modernized Bulgarian art in the interwar years.

Through his work, Lavrenov didn’t just paint buildings — he immortalized the soul of Bulgaria’s past. [thoughtful] This remarkable painter died in 1978, and in respect of his work, the whole street that you have walked since the East gate is named after him.
